Lexapro Research
Following two researches were carried out on Escitalopram - the active ingredient in Lexapro.

Escitalopram
By: - Burke WJ. [ University of Nebraska Department of Psychiatry, 985580 Nebraska Medical Center , Omaha , NE 68198 -5580, USA ]

The Research :
Escitalopram oxalate (S-citalopram, Lexapro), a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor antidepressant which is the S-enantiomer of citalopram, is in clinical development worldwide for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. Preclinical studies demonstrate that the therapeutic activity of citalopram resides in the S-isomer and that Escitalopram binds with high affinity to the human serotonin transporter. Conversely, R-citalopram is approximately 30-fold less potent than Escitalopram at this transporter. Escitalopram has linear pharmacokinetics, so that plasma levels increase proportionately and predictably with increased doses and its half-life of 27 - 32 h is consistent with once-daily dosing. In addition, Escitalopram has negligible effects on cytochrome P450 drug-metabolising enzymes in vitro, suggesting a low potential for drug-drug interactions. The efficacy of Escitalopram in patients with major depressive disorder has been demonstrated in multiple short-term, placebo-controlled clinical trials, three of which included citalopram as an active control, as well as in a 36-week study evaluating efficacy in the prevention of depression relapse. In these studies, Escitalopram was shown to have robust efficacy in the treatment of depression and associated symptoms of anxiety relative to placebo. Efficacy has also been shown in treating generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder. Results also suggest that, at comparable doses, Escitalopram demonstrates clinically relevant and statistically significant superiority to placebo treatment earlier than citalopram. Analysis of the safety database shows a low rate of discontinuation due to adverse events, and there was no statistically significant difference between Escitalopram 10 mg/day and placebo in the proportion of patients who discontinued treatment early because of adverse events. The most common adverse events associated with Escitalopram which occurred at a rate greater than placebo include nausea, insomnia, ejaculation disorder, diarrhea, dry mouth and somnolence. Only nausea occurred in > 10% of Escitalopram-treated patients.

Effects of Escitalopram on anxiety symptoms in depression
BY: - Spadone C. [Hopital Saint-Louis (AP-HP) Paris , France ]

The Research :
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, the antidepressants most widely prescribed today, exert specific action against various anxiety disorders and have an excellent acceptability profile. In addition, anxiety problems are commonly seen in depression, in the form of either characterized anxiety disorders or associated anxious symptoms. Such symptoms of anxiety result in increased risk of suicide and appear to be associated with development of more severe and chronic depressive disorders. Because of the adverse effects associated with anxiolytics, in particular benzodiazepines, their indications have been restricted. Consequently, first-line drug therapy for anxiety symptoms associated with depression involves selection of an antidepressant having anxiolytic properties. Specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors are commonly favored at present since they have a less pronounced sedative effect than the tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline, maprotiline). Escitalopram, the active enantiomer of citalopram, has demonstrated efficacy and rapidity of action upon depressive symptoms seen in major depressive episodes. Global analysis of three studies comparing citalopram and Escitalopram with a placebo in depressive disorders allowed specific investigation of the activity of these molecules upon the anxiety component of depressive disorders. Anxiety was quantitatively evaluated using item 6 (inner tension) of the MADRS, and for two of the three studies, using the anxiety sub-score of the HAM-D as well as the HAM-A total score. The results for the two active molecules demonstrate significant superiority in comparison with the placebo. Furthermore, in the case of Escitalopram, this improvement appeared significant as of the first week of treatment (p<0.05); by the end of the second week of treatment, the degree of significance was even more pronounced (p<0.001). The tolerability profile of these two active substances was very good. These studies thus demonstrate the efficacy of Escitalopram against anxiety symptoms associated with depression, together with particularly interesting rapidity of action. Use of an antidepressant with proven activity against anxiety accompanying depression avoid the need for co-prescription of tranquillizers, which themselves are not devoid of adverse effects.

Lexapro Results

In clinical trials and laboratory tests - Lexapro proved to be very effective compared to its competitor antidepressants. A study showed the result that Escitalopram - the main active ingredient of Lexapro significantly reduce depression in children and adolescents. A pooled analysis of flexible-dose studies demonstrating that patients with major depressive disorder treated with either escitalopram or CelexaTM (citalopram HBr) showed significantly greater improvement than patients receiving placebo.

Moreover, Lexapro was significantly better tolerated than Effexor XR, with four times as many patients in the Effexor XR group discontinuing the study due to side effects. This is the first study to demonstrate comparable remission rates between a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and Effexor XR. The findings were presented at a global meeting of neuro-psycho-pharmacologists in Prague , Czech Republic .

Lexapro and Weight Gain
Clinically there is no cause for weight gain amongst Lexapro users. Lexapro does not stimulate weight atleast under clinical condition.

Yet, there are cases of excessive weight gain during the consumption of Lexapro. Several consumers of Lexapro complained that they have gained too much weight within months while they were on Lexapro.

However it is not exactly known whether Lexapro results in weight gain or weight loss. There are complaints of excessive weight loss as well during Lexapro. Doctors believe that it's all concerned with individuals eating habit and not by using Lexapro.

Lexapro Insomnia
Lexapro and insomnia are related only by one means. Insomnia is one of the withdrawal symptoms of Lexapro. It is very much understandable since the body takes some time to accumulate the withdrawn effects of Lexapro.

Although you may hear the insomnia problem amongst the users - few of them are correct information. Insomnia does not occur during Lexapro consumption. Yet, users may find difficult to sleep when they are withdrawn from Lexapro.

Lexapro Medication
The antidepressant Lexapro is one of the latest medicines in the category of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) Drugs. Lexapro medication depends on individual-to-individual as per body intake. There are few advantages of Lexapro over its competitor drugs - which can summarized as:

» In clinical trials, Lexapro 10 mg/day demonstrated comparable efficacy to a higher dose     of Celexa 40 mg/day.
    »
Lexapro significantly improved depression for many patients beginning at week 1 or 2    (full antidepressant effect may take 4 to 6 weeks).
    »
Lexapro effectively treats anxiety symptoms associated with depression.
    »
At 10 mg/day, overall incidence of side effects and drop-out rates due to adverse events    were comparable to placebo.
    »
Simple 10 mg/day starting dose for all patients.

As a result, LEXAPRO is able to provide effective and well-tolerated therapy for depressed patients.

How does LEXAPRO improve depression?
LEXAPRO helps to restore the brain's chemical balance by increasing the available supply of serotonin, a substance in the brain believed to influence mood.

When will I start feeling better?
In clinical studies, many patients treated with LEXAPRO began to feel improvement in their depression beginning in 1 or 2 weeks, although full antidepressant effect may take 4 to 6 weeks. You should follow up with your healthcare provider and report your progress.

Can I stop taking LEXAPRO once I feel better?
No. You should take your medication as long as your healthcare provider instructs, even if you start feeling better, because otherwise your depression could return or worsen. Your healthcare provider may ask you to keep taking LEXAPRO even if you are feeling better, to help keep your depression from coming back.

Are there side effects with LEXAPRO?
LEXAPRO is well tolerated by most people. The most commonly reported side effects of LEXAPRO are nausea, insomnia, problems with ejaculation, drowsiness, increased sweating, and fatigue. Most of the side effects experienced by patients taking LEXAPRO are mild and go away with continued treatment, and usually do not cause patients to stop taking LEXAPRO.
